3 Tips for Virtual 1-On-1 Networking

by Chi Chi Okezie

Savvy networkers can find useful ways of staying connected after the initial meeting or networking event. 1-on-1 meetings give people a chance to further connect without the common distractions during a typical function. These meetings also allow the participants to gain more insight and use communication to further their agendas. An excellent way to build these relationships can be in person or virtually. Virtual meetings present various nuances that are different from in person meetings. It is important to know the differences and facilitate these interactions properly.

Listed below are 3 tips for mastering a successful digital connection.

#1. Face to Face

Consider video conferencing rather than a phone conference for your next 1-on-1 session. This is an excellent way to promote your personal brand and show professionalism. Being able to see and listen to your counterpart (and vice versa) increases trust. During the video meeting, you are able to connect with your counterpart via verbal and non verbal communication. It also enables understanding and offers a sense of credibility. Definitely do your due diligence. Before the meeting, make sure you are properly groomed and appropriately dressed.

#2: Remember the Time

Although the meeting is designed to further business and other opportunities, also make reference as to how you originally connected with your counterpart. Do not forget to mention how, where, when you met. Use this as a platform for building the relationship through commonalities. Also, mention key details or occurrences which took place during your initial meeting or contact. If they are significant in developing the relationship, acknowledge and expand on those instances. Use these techniques as a means of establishing rapport.

#3: Looking Ahead

The 1-on-1 meeting can serve many useful purposes. One of which, creating additional avenues to do business in the future. Do not view the meeting as transactional or short term. Believe it or not, the role of your counterpart can evolve within your network and after the virtual meeting. Be open minded, business focused and networking oriented offer tremendous advantages.

Utilize these strategies to develop quality and viable networks. Be focused and intentional in your virtual process and communication style. Concentrate on fostering partnerships and long term relationships for your advancement.
