Your frog is your most difficult and unpleasant task that you have to deal with during the day. If you “eat this frog” – handle the most difficult task first thing in the morning – the rest of the day can only get better. Almost always, the most difficult and unpleasant task is the one that is also the most important in terms of getting return on your time invested. This is the task that can have a significant positive impact on your personal or professional life.

What if you have two frogs to eat? It doesn’t make sense to sit and stare at them. Just pick the uglier of the two and gulp it down!

We often procrastinate on such important tasks. Resist the temptation to do the easier task first. Make it a routine and don’t even think about it – just gulp that frog down – first thing in the morning. If we get into the habit of tackling our most important tasks first thing in the morning, it gives us momentum and energy for the rest of the day.

In his book title “Eat That Frog” author Brian Tracy narrates his personal experience with his client – post the training session on “Eat That Frog”. The CEO of the company was so impressed with this concept that he bought copper frogs to display at each of his salespeople’s desk. This was a reminder to “eat the frog” first thing in the morning. The company doubled its sales in less than 18 months and the CEO credited the success to the frogs on the desk!

Unless we make a conscious effort to complete our tasks in the order of priority and importance – we will fall into the trap of avoiding the unpleasant tasks. This can soon become a bad habit we call procrastination. Good habits are essential to the success of the individual as well as the company.
