Identifying Competency

Leadership competency is qualities and abilities you may possess that make you an effective leader. When leadership is applied correctly, it allows followers to trust leaders and look to them for guidance and assistance in many situations. Your leadership competency at or level to demonstrate these qualities will also increase the commitment and trust that your team now has in you. Your leadership potential should not be underestimated and should be assessed with a full awareness of its scope and impact on your team members.

Leadership competency is important because it is practiced on a day to day basis by most members of most organizations. Leading is a daily job and it demands the leader to possess the skills and competencies to organize, direct and manage people in various situations. It requires a vision, an inspiring message and the right style and personality to get the job done.

Leadership competency is also related to teamwork and conflict management. Teamwork is the cornerstone of every organization, whether it is small local or international. Teamwork is a crucial element of organizational culture and functioning. Without teamwork, there would be no purpose for group projects, sports teams or work teams. People develop their skills through participation and they become more capable managers when they partake regularly in group projects and activities. This is one way that people develop leadership skills.

Leadership competency is equally important in the workplace as it is in the home, in organizations or in sports. You must have skills and competencies that allow you to lead people effectively in all kinds of situations. If you have not developed these leadership skills, then it is time to consider how you could develop these skills and whether you are capable of filling the role of a leadership role successfully.

Leadership competency can be defined as the ability to make sound decisions under pressure. The best leaders are not only able to make decisions; they also know how to make good decisions under pressure. A good leader must possess both the decision-making and problem-solving skills. These two competencies are closely related.

Skills in leadership development are best developed through a process of self-improvement. There are many different programs and tools available for leadership development; however, it is important to remember that the competencies and skills required for leadership do not come from a program. These are in fact learned, through experience, through teaching and through real-life application.

It is important to note that every individual has unique leadership skills. When you are leading others, you need to stand out from the crowd. Leading others involves communication skills, decision-making and problem-solving. No matter who you are, if you do not possess a set of skills that set you apart from others you will likely find yourself with a stagnant and failing business. You need to develop your business skills while leading others so that the best leader is always recognized and rewarded for their accomplishments. In addition to your leadership competencies, you need to display integrity in dealing with difficult people and you need to demonstrate patience.

You can develop leadership skills in yourself by reading books, attending seminars and asking others who have been successful to share their experiences. You can also obtain leadership training from professionals who will teach you the ins and outs of the organization. There are many leadership development programs that are offered at local community colleges of business that will prepare you for higher levels of management positions. As you develop your leadership skills, you will become more valuable to your organization and your clients.
