Central Statistics Office COVID-19 adjusted unemployment rate for January 2022

The Central Statistics Office (CSO) has (02 February 2022) issued Monthly Unemployment Estimates results in respect of January 2022.

The results published show that the COVID-19 crisis has continued to have an impact on the labour market in Ireland in January 2022. While the standard measure of Monthly Unemployment was 5.3% in January 2022, the COVID-19 Adjusted Measure of Unemployment could indicate a rate of 7.8% if all claimants of the Pandemic Unemployment Payment (PUP) were classified as unemployed. This alternative measure is up from a revised rate of 7.4% in December 2021 and down from 27.1% in January 2021.

  • The seasonally adjusted Monthly Unemployment Rate for January 2022 using standard methodology shows:
    • An unemployment rate of 5.3% for all persons, which was up from a revised rate of 5.2% in December 2021 and is down from 7.0% in January 2021
    • Looking at these figures by sex, the unemployment rate was 5.1% for males and 5.4% for females
    • Breaking down these figures by age, the unemployment rate was 13.0% for persons aged 15 – 24 years and 4.0% for persons aged 25 – 74 years
  • The alternative COVID-19 adjusted unemployment measure for January 2022, which includes those in receipt of the Pandemic Unemployment Payment (PUP), shows:
    • An unemployment rate of 7.8% for all persons, up from a revised rate of 7.4% in December 2021 and down from 27.1% in January 2021
    • Looking at these figures by sex, 8.2% of males and 7.4% of females in the labour force were unemployed
    • Analysing these figures by age, the unemployment rate was 14.3% for persons aged 15 – 24 years and 6.9% for persons aged 25 – 74 years
